The Most Complimentary Interview Wardrobe

Your interview date is set. That means you were among the few people selected from dozens of applicants to continue the race to a job offer. Not only do you really need this job, but you’ve researched it thoroughly in preparation for difficult interview questions, and you’re really psyched. But wait. What will you wear to this coveted interview?

The administrative assistant will take you to an office or conference room where the interviewer and possibly others will be waiting for you. They’ve reviewed your resume and are ready. The door opens and you walk in, full of energy and a big smile. They look at you and notice your appearance. You’re making an impression, and you want it to be a great one. You also know that that first impression is a lasting one. Some of what they see cannot be changed. This is how you look, whether it’s good or bad. But there’s a lot you can do to improve this first and vital impression.

It is somewhat easier for men. Make sure your appearance is clean. Recently, a haircut and a close shave are a must. A gray beard or mustache adds years to your age. A well-tailored suit in a dark color, but not black, is usually recommended. In the summer, a nice light color is appropriate, but preferably for the next interview, not the first. However, if the dress code is practical, the claim may be waived. A well fitted and modern style shirt should complement your outfit. Investing in today’s fashionable tie is smart. A ballroom sales professional can guide you, or you can look at a few pictures from one of the clothing store catalogs that regularly flood your inbox. The belt should also emphasize your positive appearance. Socks should be plain, without any visible pattern, and match the color of your shoes. Shoes are extremely important not only to feel comfortable, but also because they also speak about you. Well-polished new shoes create the image you want to portray.

The same principles apply to women. A hairstyle that enhances the look is important. Don’t overdo the makeup and my advice is to skip the perfume when going to an interview. Your perfume taste may not match others and the scent may linger long after you leave the office. If you smoke, I suggest you refrain from smoking at least six hours before the interview and make sure your interview clothes are aired. non-smokers can detect smokers from a distance. Keep jewelry to a minimum and remember that embellishments and open, short skirts can increase your modeling candidacy, but if you’re applying for other jobs, consider a more professional and conservative look.

Remember the cliché that “clothes make the man” and if you believe that, investing in your interview wardrobe to boost your image and therefore your chances of a job offer makes sense. Your comments are welcome.
