Employee absenteeism is a problem for every business and can be costly for employers. 100% attendance of all your employees is of course not possible. However, knowing how to deal with this problem and how to prevent employee absenteeism can reduce its impact on your business. Continue reading below for some tips.
- Make sure there is a clear policy. Having a policy helps you clearly address this issue effectively. Also, this policy should be clearly communicated to all employees so you don’t run into excuses like “I didn’t know” or “no one told me that.” Posting this policy on the company’s intranet also helps employees know where to look when needed.
- Track absences of employees. Using an absence management system to track employee absences helps you understand if employees are exceeding their allowed days of absence and which employees are exceeding this period. Managers and the human resources department should be well trained on how to track employee absences and when employees will be counted as absent.
- Offer flexible work options. Giving employees flexibility in their work schedules is another way to reduce absenteeism. This way, employees can work from home or anywhere they want with an internet connection. If telecommuting is not an option for your office, you can make the office hours flexible, for example employees can come to work anytime between 8am and 10am and work for 8 hours. This way, employees can take control of their time.
- Offer sufficient paid leave. Employees should spend time outside of work as well with their family or loved ones. Therefore, it is important to give them that work/life balance so they can stay healthy and productive. Furthermore, the most common days of absence are usually Fridays and Mondays. Therefore, if employees have enough vacation days, instead of showing up without fail, they can notify their colleagues in advance by taking that day off. In this way, the employee can take over his duties while he is on vacation and the work does not stop.
