A Reddit User Made an AI Bot That Got Him 50 Job Interviews

What if AI could apply for jobs and interview you for you by crafting personalized cover letters and resumes tailored to each job description?

It might be possible. A Reddit user who deleted their account five months ago after posting about their experiences on the Get Busy community created an AI bot to automatically apply for 1,000 jobs on their behalf. The bot applied for jobs and gave the user 50 interviews in a month.

AI took a person’s data, such as where they worked and their education, and automatically applied for jobs by creating unique cover letters, resumes and answers to application questions.

“And all this while I was sleeping!” Reddit user wrote. “In just one month, this method helped me land nearly 50 interviews. Personalized resumes and cover letters based on each job description made a significant difference.”

The user did not specify the exact job listing sites, such as Indeed or LinkedIn, that the bot visited. They wrote that unique cover letters and resumes helped them get past automated screening systems and get people’s attention.

A Reddit user has posted a link to the AI bot’s code so other people can try it out for free. Many Redditors have mentioned that the project is broken and not working at the time of writing.

Even if the tool is live, it may not be wise to use it. A report published by the Financial Times in August found that while nearly half of job applicants use ChatGPT and other AI tools to help with their job applications, employers can easily tell if an applicant is using AI, and that has a negative impact on the candidate.

Victoria McLean, chief executive of career consultancy CityCV, told the publication that “language without proper editing will be sloppy and generic, and hiring managers can detect that.”

According to an April Resume Genius survey, the biggest red flag for hiring managers was AI-generated resumes.

Meanwhile, employers use automated systems to screen candidates. A Guardian report in March revealed that AI is conducting interviews on behalf of companies and shutting down candidates before they even speak to a hiring manager. According to a Jobscan study, 99% of Fortune 500 companies use artificial intelligence technology in their recruitment process.
